Young and Old Are GOLD Visiting the Care Home Together

A weekly visit to the care home grew into the children's favourite outing. Britt shares the special moments that happen when young and old come together.
An Idea from Two Years Ago
We share this lovely feeling with the older people every week. Two years ago, I visited the care home in our neighbourhood to see whether we could organise something together. The idea was welcomed enthusiastically, and we have been visiting every week ever since.
We were assigned a regular unit for older people living with dementia, including mild dementia. At first, we visited all the rooms each week for a little chat or a cuddle. Before long, we were given more freedom, and now we visit at least once a week. It has become the children's favourite outing.
The Magic Between Young and Old
We enjoy going for walks with the older people and combine them with a trip to the playground. I cannot put the magic between young and old into words. You have to see it and feel it.
As soon as we walk in, it is as if I have brought the royal family with me, with each little one acting like a magnet. Everyone waves to the children, gives them a gentle touch or a cuddle, or stops for a chat.
One gentleman who usually struggles to walk happily plays football in the playground as if he were 40 again. And the lady who usually stays in her room comes along with us to the restaurant for coffee and cake.

Feeling Right at Home
The children feel at home there. Everything is familiar. The residents, the staff, the other visitors and family members all adore them. They always know where to find a biscuit and happily put on a show in the restaurant whenever a pianist is playing.
The pianist always plays songs from Frozen or children's songs from years ago, and the whole restaurant sings along at the top of their voices while my little ones dance in the spotlight.
Young and Old Are GOLD
It is impossible to describe how much joy these little ones bring, and I will keep making these visits for as long as I can. Because our motto is: young and old are GOLD!
