The First Days With a Newborn: A Postpartum Maternity Care Professional Answers Your Questions

How Often Should You Wake a Newborn at Night for a Feed?

During the first few days of the postpartum period, you should wake your baby approximately every 3 hours for a feed. As the week progresses, depending on how well your baby is growing and gaining weight, you can gradually allow a little more time between feeds.

What If Your Baby Only Wants to Sleep on You?

This is one of the most common concerns new parents raise, and Bonita's advice is reassuring: keep mom close, so baby can still hear and feel her presence. Sometimes having something nearby that smells like mom can also help, since her familiar scent can be very comforting and reassuring for a newborn.

In other words, wanting to be close to mom isn't a habit to break early. It's simply how newborns feel safe in a world
    that's brand new to them.

How Can You Tell If a Newborn Is Warm Enough, Without Overdressing Them?

Feel the back of your baby's neck. If it feels clammy or sweaty, they're too warm. If it feels cold, they may be toocold. During the postpartum care week, professionals like Bonita also check the baby's temperature regularly, typically during diaper changes, making it an easy habit for parents to adopt too.

How Much Newborn Weight Loss Is Considered Normal?

A newborn may lose up to around 8% of their birth weight in the first days. Once weight loss reaches around 7%, postpartum care professionals will often already start taking measures, since the goal is to catch things early rather than wait for the number to climb further.

What Often Scares New Parents but Is Actually Normal?

A few things tend to worry new parents more than they need to: a baby turning slightly yellow (jaundice), noticeable weight loss in the first days, or mom experiencing nausea after giving birth. These are all things postpartum professionals keep a close eye on during the early days, precisely because they're common enough to expect and monitor, not necessarily a sign something has gone wrong.

What Does a Postpartum Maternity Care Professional Actually Do?

"People often see us as household help, but we are actually trained healthcare professionals," Bonita explains. After qualifying as a caregiver, additional specialized training is required to work specifically in postpartum maternity
    care.

In her words, postpartum care professionals are essentially the eyes and ears of the midwife. Because they spend around eight days with a family in their home, they see far more than a brief check-up would reveal. “You might be able to keep up appearances for two days, but not for eight,” she says. That extended time in the home also gives them an important role in noticing and identifying potential concerns within a family, including situations such as domestic violence.

The Netherlands is unique in the world for offering this kind of postpartum maternity care, and Bonita describes it as invaluable. “It is incredibly rewarding to guide new parents through those first days, share all of our tips and knowledge with them, and see how much they grow in confidence in just eight days.”

    The Takeaway

The first week with a newborn is full of moments that can feel alarming in isolation, night wakings, weight changes,a slightly yellow tint to the skin, but most of it falls within a wide range of normal. Having a clear sense of what to
expect, and the reassurance that trained professionals are there specifically to help spot anything that isn't normal, can make those first eight days feel a lot less overwhelming.

At MyRoyalKids, we think about those early days often, which is part of why our wipes are made to be as gentle aspossible, one less thing for a new parent to worry about during a week that already asks so much of them.
