Baking for KiKa with Britt and Her Happy Little Bakers

In 2020, Britt decided to take part in Baking for KiKa together with the children in her care. These days, March would not be complete without their annual baking fundraiser.
How It All Started
In 2020, I saw an appeal on social media inviting childcare settings, including home-based providers, to join the ‘Baking for KiKa’ campaign. I just had to take part. Thankfully, I had not personally been affected by childhood cancer, but this felt like the least I could do together with the healthy children in my care.
My mind went into overdrive again. I really had no idea where to start. How was I going to organise all this? Nobody around me was taking part, so I set to work on my own. Luckily, I am creative, and the ideas soon started coming.
· I put together a menu of treats to make with the little ones. Each week there would be something different, which people had to order in advance.
· Once the orders were in, I needed to find a supermarket willing to donate all the ingredients.
· Our local supermarket donated everything. It felt like a victory, and I was really getting into the swing of things.
· I looked for packaging, and thanks to social media, a company offered to print stickers to make the packages look even nicer.
· I came up with a name, the Happy Little Bakers, and created a fundraising page so we could receive donations.
· I spread the word on social media and local pages.
· Of course, that was not enough. What makes people happy? Winning things! So I plucked up the courage to ask businesses to donate prizes for a raffle. Everyone said yes straight away, and this year several businesses even offered without being asked. How lovely is that!
· We made the most wonderful bakers' hats and turned our childcare space into a proper bakery.
Learning Something New Every Year
It was one big celebration, but it was hard work too. Over the years, we learned that we could not bake 100 cupcakes in a week if we also wanted to play outside and do crafts. Every year we learned something new. Despite all the work and effort, it feels so good to do this together with the healthy children in my care. It never ceases to amaze me, but every year we raise more than the year before.
When KiKa Came to Visit
In 2024, KiKa contacted me directly. They wanted to take photos at our setting for campaign materials to use on their website, in emails and on flyers. What an honour!
After receiving the brief and exchanging a few emails, the day arrived. Lights were carried inside, cameras came out of their bags, and they arranged the decorations too. The children could simply be themselves. I baked biscuits with them while photos were taken along the way.
No staged pictures, just the children exactly as they are. We had a fantastic morning. With their cheeks rosy from tiredness and all the excitement, there was still another surprise: the actual KiKa mascot bear came to visit! Everyone could have a photo with him or give him a cuddle. Thinking back brings a huge smile to my face, but it still feels unreal that they chose my little childcare setting for this.
From Our Childcare Setting to the Front Page
The photo shoot was in January, and in March the local newspaper contacted me. Would I like to tell my story? Of course! The more attention the campaign gets, the better. The next day, the journalist came over for an interview. I thought we might get a little piece somewhere in the middle of the paper, but we ended up on the entire front page, complete with a photo, which I had not expected. But anything for a good cause!
Doing Our Small Part
Now, six years later, I still do this with all my heart. In this way, I hope we can make a small contribution to research into a cure for childhood cancer. I also think it is important to pass this on to the children in my care. Helping others whenever you can is something I want to teach them.
It is lovely to see how the parents support the fundraiser and help me spread the word. It makes me proud that even parents whose children no longer come to my setting continue to support it. In the years ahead, March will remain our ‘Baking for KiKa’ month.
